Dave Duncan gave talk on preparing hives for winter. Dave suggested that a hive have at least one full hive body of honey. A beekeeper should not be able to lift a hive easily by themselves.

Wrapping with roofing paper or the like is a good option, but be sure to leave entrances and secure the wrap, not allowing the wrap to be caught by the wind. An upper entrance is a good idea. Ventilation is a key item to winter survival.

Entersnce reducers should be used with care. Bee will die throughout the winter and clog reduced entrances leaving no exit.

Leave any uncapped honey on the hive. This is a great source for the hive throughout the winter months.

Winter options are varied. A beekeeper can feed the hive a winter mix of liquid feed, a pollen patty and/or any medications to prepare a colony for winter. This are all a matter of personal preference.
